remote online notarization

what is remote online notarization?

Remote Online Notarization (RON) is a secure process that allows a notary public to perform notarial acts using audio-visual technology over the internet, rather than requiring the signer’s physical presence. Through a state-approved digital platform, the signer’s identity is verified using methods such as credential analysis and knowledge-based authentication. The notary and signer then connect in real time through a live video session, during which the document is electronically signed and notarized.

RON provides the same legal validity as traditional notarization while offering greater convenience, accessibility, and efficiency for individuals and businesses.

where and when?

With Remote Online Notarization, the signer may be located in any state or country at the time of the appointment. Scheduling is flexible and can be arranged at any time of day or night. Please note that a surcharge may apply for services requested outside of standard business hours.

credential analysis & Knowledge-based authentication

To keep the online notarization process safe and secure, we use two steps to verify your identity:

  • Credential Analysis: You’ll take a picture of your government-issued ID (such as a driver’s license or passport). The system checks it instantly to make sure it’s valid and not altered.

  • Knowledge-Based Authentication (KBA): You’ll answer a few multiple-choice questions based on your personal history—things only you should know. These are similar to the questions you might see when verifying your identity with a bank or credit bureau.

These two steps work together to confirm your identity and protect against fraud, giving you peace of mind throughout the notarization process

notary signing agent

what is a notary signing agent?

A Notary Signing Agent (NSA) is a commissioned notary public who has received specialized training to handle and notarize loan documents. NSAs play a vital role in the mortgage and real estate industry by serving as impartial witnesses during loan signings.

Their responsibilities include:

  • Verifying the identity of borrowers.

  • Ensuring all required documents are properly signed, dated, and notarized.

  • Explaining the general purpose of the documents (without offering legal or financial advice).

  • Returning completed loan packages promptly and securely to the lender or title company.

By combining notarial expertise with knowledge of loan document procedures, Notary Signing Agents help ensure real estate transactions are executed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with state and industry regulations.

Appointments are in person or via Remote Online Notarization.

apostilles

what is an apostille?

An apostille is a special certificate issued by the Secretary of State that verifies the authenticity of a notarized or official document so it can be recognized in another country. It confirms that the notary’s commission, or the official’s signature and seal, are legitimate.

Apostilles are commonly used for documents such as birth certificates, marriage licenses, school transcripts, powers of attorney, and business records that need to be accepted internationally.

In simple terms, an apostille is like a “passport” for your documents, making them valid for use in countries that are part of the Hague Apostille Convention.

Signature Line Notary Services proudly provides apostille services nationwide. Processing times can vary, with receipt of your apostilled document typically taking anywhere from two weeks to as long as two months, depending on the type of document and the country where it will be used. We encourage you to consult with us in advance of making any travel plans that may require an apostilled document, so we can help ensure everything is completed in a timely manner. Expedited service is available.
